Mixed Media Sculpture: “Flying V”-Spring 2015 /
Fantasy Florals / Susan Barton
Co-exhibitors Belle Marko & Dylan J. Hughes
Statement:
We see Frank Stella’s V series as figurative works…highly deconstructed, ultra-minimalist human figures. There is a playful feeling to the series that evokes images of people gathering at the park….sitting on benches, rolling on the grass, posing for pictures together. His groupings and variety of colors are indicative of the four seasons; Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter, reminding us that life is all of these things.
In our piece we brought together elements of living color and texture while maintaining strict lines and balanced geometry (as represented in Stella’s paintings). Our three dimensional reflection of the series as a whole suggests a park setting with an open sky above, trees, grass and the figure of a freshly blooming flower. This mixed media piece utilizes tig-welded cold rolled steel tubing and plate, red dogwood branches, green dianthus, and silver brunia. The base was constructed to hold water so as to sustain the living elements for an extended period of time. Silver brunia and dianthus elements were carefully sized and arranged in pave fashion to visually enforce Stella’s linear infill design. Fresh dogwood branches were cut and fitted into the piece repeating the linear directive. Lastly, the metal structure was meticulously detailed with soft edges and subtle grinding striations to appear “seamless”. Sealed only by wax it is as raw and “natural” as it’s living counterparts.
